Mitchell grew up in rural Wisconsin, attended the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and earned a bachelors degree in physics and philosophy before joining the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. While in medical school, Mitchell volunteered on a crisis text line, worked with senior citizens, and edited manuscripts. Before medical school he served in AmeriCorps working in an elementary school. He lived in Japan for a year and South Korea for several months, teaching English and conducting research. Mitchell speaks French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. He enjoys learning languages, building computers, playing classical music, reading fiction, and playing video games.
