The first UW-affiliated hospital, the State of Wisconsin General Hospital, was established by the Wisconsin Legislature and constructed in 1924. The University of Wisconsin Clinical Sciences Center was opened in 1979 to replace the original hospital and provide facilities for the clinical medical departments, the UW Children’s Hospital, the Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy, and the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center. The former hospital, renamed the Medical Sciences Center, was converted into space for the basic science departments, the Dean’s Office, and medical classrooms and laboratories. In 1996, UWHC was reorganized as a public authority in order to better respond to the dynamics of the national and regional health care environment.
The Department of Psychiatry operates one of the inpatient units (B6/5) at UWHC. The inpatient unit consists of 20 beds and two seclusion rooms all in locked security. It serves adults and occasional adolescents in need of acute psychiatric care, safety, and stabilization.
The Department provides consultation/liaison services and has a strong presence in the Sleep Disorders Clinic at this site.
