Meriter Hospital, a nearby community hospital, has an inpatient unit run by a Department of Psychiatry faculty member who manages 10 beds in a 20-bed adult general psychiatry unit. Other area private practice psychiatrists admit patients to this unit. This unit is geared predominately toward assessment and short-term adult treatment, but is particularly helpful because it consists partly of an open unit in which depressive disorders are more likely to be treated. The unit represents a private practice model of inpatient psychiatric care for our trainees. Twenty beds for the treatment of children and adolescents have recently been placed under the Department; these are the only such facilities available to the Madison community.
