RESEARCH
Through research in basic science, clinical medicine and health services, psychiatry progresses as a field, thereby improving the health of the mentally ill. We are poised to make major advances in our understanding of the causes and treatments of mental illness. In August 2007, we opened the HealthEmotions Research Institute building in order to house a major expansion in our research efforts. The building is also the home of Wisconsin Sleep, the new UW sleep disorders clinic.
The Department of Psychiatry has a strong interest in exploring the neurobiological and psychosocial underpinnings of mental illness. Residents benefit by their proximity to a robust research enterprise and have extensive opportunities to pursue their own research project. Our Research Track allows one resident per year to develop into a clinician-scientist. For more information, read below.
